The Department of Research and Innovation (DRI) is part of the Ministry of Education.

DRI includes nine research departments and five technical support departments. DRI has three main divisions responsible for Standards Development, Accreditation and Metrology. Each division participates in the work of the ASEAN Consultative Committee on Standards and Quality (Working Groups 1, 2 and 3).

The Metrology Laboratory provides a range of six measurement services to industry: dimension, mass, volume, hardness, pressure and temperature.

DRI has drafted two laws on Standardization and on Metrology. It has established 19 technical committees to draft the Myanmar adoptions of international standards. Once approved, the three bodies: national standards body, national accreditation body and national institute of metrology will make up the National Quality Infrastructure.

DRI has been a correspondent member of ISO since 1 July 2005.

It is an affiliate member of IEC and an WTO TBT enquiry point.

DRI has participated in the regional work of ACCSQ (ASEAN Consultative Committee on Standards and Quality) since 1997.
